Op veel plaatsen op het internet en daarbuiten wordt de manier van denken van autistische en niet-autistische mensen rücksichtlos met elkaar vergeleken. Hetzelfde gebeurt met de verschillende vormen van intelligentie. We kunnen ons de vraag stellen of de manier van denken van autistische mensen verschilt van die van anderen en of deze verschillen kunnen beschouwd worden als verschillende vormen van intelligentie. Om te beginnen is het belangrijk te weten hoe intelligentie wordt bepaald. De traditionele opvatting van intelligentie is vaak gebaseerd op vaardigheden zoals het vermogen om abstract te denken, problemen op te lossen en te leren. Deze vaardigheden worden vaak gemeten met standaard intelligentietests, zoals de WAIS en de WISC, IQ-testen gebaseerd op bepaalde normen, waarbij de standaard 100 is.
